Chapter 5: Concede
Dreams are mirror of the deepest desires of our heart, and sometimes those desires overflow and catch us in the most vulnerable time. And it had caught Jun in his most vulnerable state – he stared at the man before him, not knowing whether he was the Kazunari in his dreams or reality – he was smiling at him but there was an obvious sign of confusion in his eyes. His dreams had become a nightmare in reality, biting him from behind.
“Kazu”
Jun abruptly stood from where he was sitting, sweating. This was not the way he wanted his feelings to be discovered – if there would be a time that he had to expose his feelings towards Kazunari, he would confess to tell him upfront, like a real gentleman should despite the possibility of being rejected. But since it had come to this there was no reason to start providing excuses.
“Yes, Mr. Matsumoto?” the younger man looked flushed.
“Uhm…” Jun cleared his throat, trying to regain from the embarrassment. it doesn’t seem that he noticed that I called him in my sleep. Does this mean I haven’t been revealed?
“I’m sorry, I thought you were asleep and thought I could just borrow a book. I’ll come back later” Kazunari explaining himself.
“It’s okay. You are free to come here anytime. Were you looking for a particular book to read?” Jun felt like the burden has been lifted and was very thankful that the younger man only thought that his attention was called for entering without permission. If that’s the case it’s only rightful to offer a helping hand.
“Not really. I am…”
“Feeling bored.” Jun finished seeing the younger man’s hesitation. Kazunari only smiled shyly, making the gentleman reminded of his dream. “If that’s the case, why don’t we take a stroll?” The gentleman didn’t quite understand what he was trying to achieve with this offer but he liked that there’s a friendly atmosphere between them. Things could start in small talks.
Knock, knock, knock, it was the head butler of the manor. Jun was informed that the master of the house was requesting his presence at his study. It must be about the business proposal for the Ohno household.
“Please tell Sho that I’ll be right there” Jun told the butler.
The butler excused himself sensing that he must be disturbing the conversation of the two gentlemen.
Jun knew that this was a perfect excuse to cancel the invitation, yet, he couldn’t put himself to say those words to Kazunari, not now that they were having normal conversation. Him not feeling anxious of making mistake with his words, and Kazunari was not looking he was ready to counter-attack whatever Jun was about to say.
“This afternoon, what do you think?” Jun got back to confirm with Kazunari, though they might be a slight change of schedule, still hoped that the younger man would take the offer.
“It’s alright Mr. Matsumoto; I don’t want to be of disturbance.”
“Nonsense. My afternoon schedule and besides it a waste if we don’t take this opportunity of having a clear sky after that rain.” Jun countered immediately. Funny that he sounded almost desperate.
“If you don’t mind, then” Kazunari cordially taking the offer.
“Then I’ll see you later” Jun set the time before he excused himself and headed to the door.
“Mr. Matsumoto” Kazunari called out to the gentleman.
“Yes”
“Thank you”
“It’s my pleasure” Jun couldn’t help his lips to form into a smile, and Kazunari smiled back – the afternoon walk looked promising.
---
Jun and Kazunari were walking towards the shade, when the gentleman suggested that they take a rest for awhile after a good stroll around the manor’s vicinity. Jun didn’t really intend the walk to be just the two of them when he invited the younger man for a walk but both the Sakurais had other matters to attend to that afternoon. But when their silent stroll were about to end, he felt that he had to do something to prolong it and that was when he saw the tree. It reminded him of the time he had first laid eyes on younger man. He wanted to see that again but this time he would be part of the picture.
Luckily, Kazunari agreed.
He leaned his back on the tree as Kazunari took a seat at the rock near the tree as Jun offered, insisted. The roughness of the trunk made it a little uncomfortable for him but he didn’t mind so much because from where he stood, he had the perfect view of Kazunari, which Jun took pleasure of staring.
He looks more fragile up-close, almost like a child.
Jun realized that unlike those times that he had glimpsed from afar, seeing him this near was completely different experience and he liked it. It’s like discovering a whole new side of Kazunari that hopefully was less known by other people – something that he could call his. And when the younger man started talking mostly about himself, Jun was in bliss. All the little hesitance lingering in his mind, he was a logical man, flew together with the wind and was replaced with every single word that Kazunari was saying. It seemed insane, but he would accept insanity if it meant sharing this moment. A moment shared by only the two of them.
When it was time to head back, Jun knew in his heart and mind that this man walking beside him was someone...I’d cross oceans for.
To be continued...
